An avid student of vintage Hawaiian postcards, Kerne Erickson manages to combine several old black and white photographs into a single colorful image that reminds us of what Waikiki Beach must have looked like during the first half of the last century, when tourist attendance was not creating the crowded scenes of today. Hawaiian vacations were not yet affordable for everyone, but the low-flying Pan Am liner in the sky surely is a sign of things to come. Still, the pink Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider hotels we recognize in this illustration are here today, so don't wait too long with paying a visit before this lovely view too is gone, and replaced by monolithic towers devoid of character that greedy developers no doubt have already dreamed up as replacement.
